The McLaren Breast Center is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing advanced and comprehensive breast health services. The Breast Center features the latest diagnostic technology, which is critical to the early detection of breast cancer and other breast conditions. Other major components of the Breast Center include evaluation and treatment planning by a multidisciplinary team of specialists; services of a dedicated patient navigator to assist patients through the diagnostic and treatment process, and a full range of education and support services.
Advanced Imaging Technology and Diagnostics
Superior breast imaging and diagnostic techniques are paramount to making an accurate assessment regarding an individual case of breast cancer or breast disease. The McLaren Breast Center has access to high resolution imaging and advanced biopsy techniques, assuring the most accurate information in detecting any abnormalities.
Digital Mammography
The most advanced digital mammography equipment available is offered in Clarkston only at the McLaren Breast Center. This mammography system incorporates revolutionary imaging technology that provides incredibly sharp images.
From the patient’s point of view, a digital mammogram is like traditional film screen mammography. Both use x-ray to generate images of the breast. However, instead of using film to capture and record the image, a digital mammogram captures the image on a special monitor. The resulting digital images are immediately available to the radiologist for review.
The radiologist views and manipulates the images on high-resolution computer monitors that enhance visualization of the structures within the breast tissue. They can adjust brightness and contrast, and zoom in on specific areas to help detect small calcifications, masses, and other changes that may be signs of early cancer.
Because there is no waiting for film to be developed, it can significantly reduce the time patients spend in the breast center, as well as reduce the need for repeat exams due to under or over exposure. Digital images are easily stored and transferred electronically.
Breast Biopsies
Mammotome (minimally invasive breast biopsy) - The Mammotome is an outpatient breast biopsy procedure that is performed in less than an hour and allows women to return to their normal routine immediately afterwards. They leave with only a small bandage that covers an incision about the size of a match head.
Procedures with the Mammotome involve the one-time insertion of a probe directly into the area of the breast that appeared suspicious, based on a physical exam or mammogram finding. The doctor guides the probe through the use of an ultrasound or stereotactic imaging systems. Once inside, the Mammotome gently vacuums, cuts and removes the tissue for examination.
Ultrasound Guided Breast Biopsy
An outpatient breast biopsy similar to Mammotome only done under ultrasound guidance.
Wire Localization of the Breast
A special needle and X-rays are used to identify the precise location of abnormal breast tissue for the purpose of performing a breast biopsy.
Breast ultrasound
Examines breast tissue using sound waves to produce pictures.
Fine needle aspiration
Aspiration of breast cyst fluid using a fine needle.
Bone Density
A screening for osteoporosis. No preparation time is needed and the examination takes approximately 10 minutes. The procedure determines bone mass. Bone mineral measurements are very highly correlated to predict the potential for bone fractures.
One-Stop Source for Information
The McLaren Breast Center is designed to be a one-stop source for information, eliminating fragmented consultation as well as wait-time for the patient. Whether it is a woman’s initial consultation or a second opinion, a team of physician specialists will collectively evaluate each case and recommend a best course of treatment. This evaluation is provided free of charge and without obligation. The following features highlight the program:
Dedicated Patient Navigator
A certified oncology nurse is available to serve as the contact person for patients and physicians participating in the Breast Center. This patient navigator provides the coordination of services, education and support as they guide patients through their entire course of care as well as future preventative care. The navigator becomes a familiar source of information, setting up conference times, answering questions, educating patients, and helping navigate through the health care system. The navigator assists physicians and the patient to determine eligibility for research studies. The patient navigator will also work with the community to identify and address the needs for cancer screening services and education in the area.
Same Day Evaluation and Recommendation
Multidisciplinary Breast Center conferences are conducted by a team of physician specialists who evaluate each patient’s case and recommend treatment plans. On conference days, patients receive a suggested treatment plan during a private session with their breast surgeon following a comprehensive discussion by our physicians specializing in cancer care.
Skilled Team of Physician Experts
The McLaren Breast Center’s team of physician specialists are experienced and well-skilled in evaluating and treating breast cancer with advanced diagnostics, treatment techniques and technology.
- Physician specialists include:
- Surgeons

- Medical Oncologists
- Pathologists
- Radiologists
- Plastic Surgeons
- Primary Care Physicians
Support Services and Programs
Following discussion with the surgeon, patients will have the opportunity to meet with other care team members involved in their health and healing.
- A physical therapist will work with the patient to maintain range of motion in the areas affected and will help them gradually work back to pre-treatment activity level and stretches, massage, breathing techniques, and exercise.
- A social worker is available to assist with any special needs the patient may have during their treatment such as personal, family and financial concerns.
- A registered dietician will provide education on managing nutritional side effects of cancer treatment and offer nutritional information for future cancer prevention.
- A representative from the American Cancer Society will discuss the Reach to Recovery Program along with many other programs and resources available. The Reach to Recovery program offers newly diagnosed women and their family members the opportunity to talk with a breast cancer survivor about their feelings, fears and concerns, and to ask questions. Reach to Recovery volunteers offer understanding, support and hope because they themselves have survived breast cancer and gone on to live normal, productive lives.
