Surgical Options Offered Through the McLaren
Bariatric Institute:
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
(LAGB): Laparoscopic gastric banding is a purely restrictive
operation. The LAGB device is a band with an inflatable balloon connected to a
reservoir implanted underneath the skin. Most patients undergoing the LABG
procedure stay one night in the hospital.
Roux-En-Y Procedure: The most commonly performed bariatric
procedure; the Roux-En-Y (gastric bypass) is both a restrictive and a
malabsorptive-free operation. The stomach is divided into a small pouch, which
holds approximately two tablespoons of food. This volume restriction creates the
sensation of being full after eating a few ounces of food. The small intestine
is then divided and sewn to the pouch so that the food goes from the stomach
pouch directly into the small intestine. The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure
is offered both laparoscopically and open. Following this procedure, patients
will be carefully monitored. This procedure requires an average hospital stay of
2 to 3 days.
At the surgeon’s discretion, certain patients may
be candidates for Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y using the da Vince Robotic Surgical
System available only in this area at McLaren Regional Medical Center.

Our post-operative program includes several web-based services through
